Western Virginia Orthopedic Surgury Position
Job Description
Have 3 orthopedic surgeons on staff. There ages are as follows: 50, 53 and 55. The surgeons are beginning to slow down as they all start reaching retirement. A fourth orthopedic surgeon retired from this market in August of 2006. Orthopedic surgeries: 2003 – 1,304; 2004 – 1161; 2005 – 1175. The number of surgeries has decreased due to the surgeons not working as hard as they did in the past. The new recruit will be joining a practice of 3 existing orthopedics.
Volume – One physician sees 35-40 patients per day. He does not see a ceiling on the volume that is available in this market.
In one of our secondary market areas, there is a small 25 bed facility. The facility does not have the equipment for orthopedic procedures. The hospital does not have an orthopedic surgeon on staff nor do they have an orthopedic surgeon occupying the multi-specialty clinic. About half of the orthopedic cases go to North Carolina and the other half travel to Martinsville. This is another volume opportunity for the new recruit.
In another secondary market, a physician has an office that is not being used in Eden, NC. The primary care physicians do refer some of their cases to him, but not all of them. He would like to start utilizing this office to pull more cases back to Martinsville. Since the primary care relationships have already been established, the presence of orthopedics in the market will increase the number of referrals.
