MGMA/ASA Anesthesia Cost Survey

By Shena J. Scott, MBA, FACMPE Immediate Past President, MGMA AAA and Executive Director, Brevard Anesthesia Services, PA, Melbourne, FL

The Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) Anesthesia Administration Assembly (AAA) and the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) collaborated on the third annual 2006 Cost Survey for Anesthesiology Practices (based on 2005 data).

In the third version, participation has increased to 149 responses (129 usable) representing over 3400 doctors, or nearly ten percent (10%) of active ASA members. In addition, there were 64 responses (52 usable) to this year's inaugural pain management survey, representing well over 100 pain management physicians. As participation has grown, information has been broken down into more tables. New in 2006 were both a separate set of academic tables within the anesthesiology section and a completely separate section of pain tables.

While some states have been hit harder than others, virtually all facilities have had to deal with staffing issues within the anesthesia specialty. According to a nationwide survey of senior hospital administrators conducted by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), 47 percent of hospitals reported a shutdown or reduction in OR hours due to the shortage of anesthesia providers.

Anesthesiologists' Advice to New U.S. President

Even before the November 4 election, as the U.S. economy began going into recession, political pundits began speculating about what issues the incoming president should address in the early days of his presidency—if not sooner. During that time LocumTenens.com decided to find out what issues were on the minds of America's physicians.

In October 2008 we received 1,457 responses to a two-question survey regarding the top issue area he should address during his first year in office and their advice regarding his first 100 days as president.

Considering our timing, it's no surprise that among 150 anesthesiologists responding to the LocumTenens.com survey, almost two-thirds (65%) indicated the U.S. economy was the most pressing year-one issue. However, it's interesting to note that physicians are not that different from many other Americans who were concerned about many issues beyond their own careers and industries as the 2008 election neared.

Following are highlights of anesthesiologists' advice to our new Commander in Chief (who we now know to be President Barack Obama).

Anesthesiologist Salaries and Universal Healthcare

Anesthesiologists Express Frustration with the "Business" of Medicine

LocumTenens.com Physician Survey Shows Reimbursement, Administration as Key Frustrations

Alpharetta, Ga., October 11, 2007—"I'd pay doctors and nurses like professional athletes!" That was one anesthesiologist's unaided answer to the physician survey question, "If you could change one thing about practicing medicine, what would it be?"

Among more than 300 other anesthesiologist responses to the 2007 national physician survey conducted in summer 2007 by physician recruiting firm LocumTenens.com were these:

  • "I would return the patient-doctor relationship to one of greater trust and cut out the intervention of the "suits" who deem what is and is not necessary in a patient's care."
  • "Get the government and insurance companies to quit micromanaging medicine.
  • "The dehumanization brought on by over-emphasis on efficiency and cost savings."
