LocumTenens.com turns 10,
sends 20 kids to Camp Braveheart

ALPHARETTA, GA, June 14, 2005

Horseback riding. Swimming. Putting on a talent show. Many children who attend summer camps take activities like these for granted. But for children with heart disease, they can be life-changing experiences.

That’s why there’s Camp Braveheart. Organized by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (Children’s) and funded by donations, Camp Braveheart gives patients of Children’s Sibley Heart Center a chance to do things other kids do at summer camp, but without worries over medical procedures or fear of being different from their peers. Campers stay busy with activities like horseback riding, arts and crafts, archery, mountain biking, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, tennis, mini-golf, and campfires. Medical professionals join Children’s staff and volunteers to ensure campers’ safety.

A record 112 children enjoyed the five-day experience held at Camp Twin Lakes (a facility in Rutledge, Ga., designed for children with special needs) over the week of Memorial Day this year, Camp Director Cheryl White said. "We had record demand for this year’s camp, but the budget did not support the number of campers," White said. "LocumTenens.com's generous donation allowed additional children to enjoy camp this year.”

Giving meaning to success

A physician recruiting firm based in Alpharetta, Ga., LocumTenens.com discovered Camp Braveheart while researching local healthcare causes the company might support in honor of its 10th corporate anniversary. The firm’s $10,000 donation covers camp costs for a total of 20 children attending the 2005 and 2006 camp sessions.

“We’ve enjoyed much growth and success over the past decade, so we decided it was important to give something back to the community and the industry in which we’ve thrived,” LocumTenens.com President David Roush said. “Once we learned about Camp Braveheart, it was a unanimous partnership decision.”

Speaking from the heart

At a recent anniversary celebration for LocumTenens.com associates, longtime Camp Braveheart volunteer Michelle Harmon said meeting camp founders Kathy and Roger Flynn and their daughter Ansley helped her deal with her own situation. “As a first-time mom whose child would face eight surgeries before her first birthday, I looked at beautiful little Ansley and said, ‘I can handle this,’ ” Harmon said. “Ansley would be proud to see how many lives have been touched in her memory.”

Located approximately 50 miles east of Atlanta, Camp Braveheart is for children and teens with heart disease and heart transplant recipients ages 7 to 17. “You don’t have to be a pediatrician to know that children desperately want to be like other kids their age,” Roush said. “Camp Braveheart offers a week of ‘normal childhood’ to children who’ve experienced more health issues than most middle-aged adults.”

Camp Braveheart is a program of Children’s Sibley Heart Center, the leading pediatric cardiac program in the Southeast. Sibley has been named among America’s top five pediatric cardiac programs by Child magazine twice.

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta enhances the lives of children through excellence in patient care, research and education. With 430 licensed beds in two hospitals and more than 20,000 annual inpatient visits, Children’s is one of the largest pediatric healthcare systems in the country. Children’s is recognized for excellence in cardiology, cancer treatment, transplant services and many other pediatric specialties. As a nonprofit organization, Children’s benefits from generous philanthropic and volunteer support from the community and the state, enabling the system to enhance services and programs for children and their families.
