Locum Gastroenterologist | One Week Per Month | Upstate NY | General GI, EGD & Colonoscopy | Epic
Job description
Start: October 5, 2026 (or as soon as credentialed)
Length: 6 months / 26 weeks (no exceptions; full contract commitment required)
Coverage: One week per month - inpatient GI consults plus inpatient and outpatient endoscopy
Schedule: Monday-Thursday, 7:30 AM-4:00 PM; Friday 7:30 AM-12:00 PM procedures; up to 48 hours per week
Call: Friday 12:00 PM through Sunday 8:00 AM, including Friday and Saturday nights; no scheduled overnight call Monday-Thursday; 2 of 4 winter holidays required
Volume: Approximately 4-5 new inpatient consults per day, plus inpatient and outpatient endoscopy
Practice Setting: Acute care hospital - inpatient consults and hospital-based endoscopy
Procedures: Colonoscopy and EGD required; ERCP and EUS not required (general GI need)
Monday-Thursday: inpatient GI procedures with MAC anesthesia 7:30-9:00 AM, outpatient GI procedures with MAC anesthesia 9:00 AM-2:00 PM, and rounds with the GI NP plus inpatient consultations 2:00-4:00 PM. Friday: inpatient procedures with MAC anesthesia 7:30-9:00 AM and outpatient procedures with IV sedation 9:00 AM-12:00 PM, followed by weekend call coverage with emergent inpatient procedures as needed.
Evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients with gastrointestinal disorders. Oversee and supervise the GI NP in the management of GI consultations. For MAC cases, pre-op and post-op care is shared with anesthesia; for IV sedation cases, the endoscopist is responsible for pre-op and post-op care. Collaborate with advanced practice providers, hospitalists, and multidisciplinary care teams, and document care timely in Epic.
Support includes GI NP coverage for inpatient consults Monday-Thursday (not available Friday morning through Sunday morning), a hospitalist team handling admissions, MAC anesthesia Monday-Thursday, and dedicated nursing and ancillary staff. Two procedure rooms on site (1 OR and 1 endoscopy room) with Olympus 190 HD scopes.
Requirements
MD or DO from an accredited institution
Board Certified in Gastroenterology
Minimum of 3 years of gastroenterology experience
New York license and DEA required (open to licensure - client will license)
Comfortable performing colonoscopy and EGD independently
Commitment to the full 6-month contract; all RTO submitted upfront, no more than 3 weeks total
Credentialing timeframe approximately 45-60 days
Epic familiarity and prior locums/hospital-based GI experience preferred
