Job Description: Surgical Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP)

Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Surgical Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner for a dual-role assignment involving Surgical First Assist in the Operating Room and Surgical Floor coverage. This position provides comprehensive care for acutely ill adults, primarily within General Surgery, OB/GYN, and Orthopedic specialties. While the current need is for August coverage, there is a strong potential for the contract to extend through the end of the year.

Schedule & Availability
Initial Coverage (August):

8/6 – 8/8: Three 12-hour shifts.

8/21 – 8/28: Flexible scheduling (5x8s, 4x10s, or 3x12s).

Call Opportunities:

Weekend Call: 1–2 weekends per month (Friday 5:00 PM – Monday 7:00 AM).

Rounding: Saturday and Sunday (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM).

Weeknight Call: Approximately 4 shifts per month (5:00 PM – 7:00 AM).

Standard Shift Times:

Days: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM.

Weekday Call: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM or 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM.

Clinical Responsibilities
Surgical First Assist (OR)
Perform hemostasis (stopping excess bleeding) and cauterizing wounds/vessels.

Position and immobilize patients to ensure safety and surgical access.

Assist with suction, drainage, irrigation, and packing.

Place clamps, sutures, and apply skin adhesives or staples.

Surgical Floor Coverage
Conduct patient rounding and document progress notes.

Manage orders, consults, and discharge planning.

Patient Ratio: 1:10–15.

Acuity: Acutely ill adults with diverse medical needs.

Submission & Skill Requirements
Experience: Minimum of 2 years of recent experience in a surgical setting.

Licensure: Must have an active New York (NY) State License in hand.

EMR: Epic experience is required.

Certifications (AHA Only): BLS, ACLS, and ATLS are required.

Education: ECFMG certificate required if educated outside the U.S.

Facility & Unit Information
Total Beds: 109.

Medication System: Pyxis.

Certifications: Level 1 Perinatal Center, SAFE Designated Center, Primary Stroke Center, and DNV Accredited Facility.

Professional Conduct: Excellent written and verbal communication is a must.

Unit Policies & Dress Code
Attendance: 2-hour notice required for call-ins to both the supervisor and agency.

Cell Phones: Use is strictly prohibited in patient care areas; must be kept in lockers.

Attire: Business Casual with clean, closed-toe, and closed-heel shoes. Hosiery is required.

Grooming: Natural-looking hair colors only.

Nails: No artificial enhancements (acrylics, gels, shellac, etc.). Natural nails must be <1/4" long.

Jewelry/Piercings: Maximum 2 pairs of earrings. Facial and tongue jewelry are prohibited.

Scent Policy: Use of perfumes, colognes, or strong sprays is prohibited.
