About the facility

This facility is licensed for 100 acute care beds and is situated at the junction of Interstate 81 and Interstate 77. The emergency department operates with 14 beds and maintains an average daily census of 60, while the intensive care unit provides 6 dedicated beds. The facility maintains established clinical protocols and the infrastructure necessary to support call-based general surgery coverage across inpatient and outpatient settings on an on-site basis.

Wytheville offers clinicians on assignment access to a range of outdoor, historical, and cultural attractions suited to varied interests. The area provides opportunities for hiking, fishing, biking, and paddling along trails and waterways, including New River Trail State Park, as well as scenic drives through the surrounding Appalachian terrain. Local landmarks such as Big Walker Lookout, Beagle Ridge Herb Farm, and the Millwald Theatre, along with a downtown district featuring boutique shops, breweries, and dining options, provide additional options for leisure during time away from clinical responsibilities.

About the clinician's workday

This opportunity requires 24-hour call coverage from 7 a.m. to 7 a.m. The physician must respond by phone within 30 minutes and be available in person within one hour, maintaining cell service at all times. Hotel accommodation information for each assignment must also be provided to the Medical Staff Office as a backup contact method. Required privileges include central lines, appendectomy, cholecystectomy, colectomy, colonoscopy, EGD, emergency surgery stabilization for transfer, biopsy/I&D, hemorrhoidectomy, hernia repair, port-a-cath placement, small bowel cases, thoracentesis, chest tube placement, assisting GYN surgeons with hysterectomies as needed, and PEG-tube placement. Competency must be demonstrated through case logs from the past two years.
