Schedule: Varied clinical and administrative schedule based on NICU coverage (typically 12–24 hour shifts)
Weekend Requirements: Rotational weekend NICU coverage (24-hour shifts as scheduled)
Call Requirements: Shared rotational neonatal call coverage as part of the physician leadership team (24-hour coverage)
Relocation: Requires residency within the immediate local area; relocation assistance available
Position Summary
A premier pediatric medical group in the Roanoke, VA area is seeking a Board-Certified Neonatologist (MD/DO) for a Practice Medical Director leadership role. Operating within a high-acuity, 60-bed Level IIIB NICU (~625 annual admissions) affiliated with a regional medical school, this position combines direct clinical care, clinical operations management, quality improvement leadership, and academic mentoring for medical students and residents.
Core Responsibilities & Clinical Scope
Clinical Operations & Leadership: Serve as Practice Medical Director, managing clinical operations, provider performance, quality improvement, patient safety initiatives, and service line growth in collaboration with hospital leadership.
Level IIIB Clinical Care: Provide advanced neonatal care alongside multidisciplinary pediatric subspecialists (including Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Pediatric Surgery), utilizing therapies such as High-Frequency Ventilation and Nitric Oxide Therapy.
Academic & Scholarly Engagement: Oversee educational programming, Grand Rounds, and simulation Boot Camps; instruct medical students and pediatric/family medicine residents; mentor residents in research and quality improvement projects.
Submission & Qualification Requirements
Licensure & Board Certification:
Board Certification: Board Certified in Neonatology [REQUIRED]. (Board Eligible candidates will NOT be accepted).
Medical Degree: Active MD or DO degree [REQUIRED].
State Licensure: Active Virginia Medical License or willingness/eligibility to obtain prior to start [REQUIRED].
DEA Certification: Active DEA certificate or ability to obtain prior to start [REQUIRED].
Clinical & Leadership Experience:
Experienced Neonatologist with documented clinical leadership in a NICU setting or program development [REQUIRED].
Eligible for hospital credentialing and clinical privileges [REQUIRED].
Documentation & Compliance Checklist:
NPDB Self Query: Active National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) Self Query Report issued within the last 30 days [REQUIRED at presentation - no exemptions].
Visa Status: Must specify visa status. (Candidates requiring J-1 or H-1B visa sponsorship are NOT accepted).

Clearance Notice: Provider clearance is conducted on a facility-by-facility basis.
