When deteriorating nerve cells cause “ringing in the eyes”

In much the same way that tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, accompanies hearing loss, a similar phenomenon occurs in people suffering from retinal degeneration. As photoreceptors begin to die, the upsurge in retinoic acid receptors and retinal ganglion cell activity prevents the brain from picking out visual signals. Researchers at the University of California in Berkeley are repurposing various gene and drug therapies in hopes to block the receptors responsible for causing the proverbial “ringing in the eyes.”
