Job description
Specialty: PCICU (Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit)
Location: San Francisco, CA
Start Date: 02/02/2026
Contract Length: 4 months, option to extend
Coverage Type: Scheduled Shifts + Optional Call
Schedule
Variable 12-hour shifts
Includes days, nights, weekends, and holidays
Must be able to provide at least 50% night or weekend coverage
Optional night and weekend call (not guaranteed)
Minimum 4×12-hour shifts per month
Practice Setting
Inpatient, Hospital
PCICU (18 beds)
Work Details
Support Staff:
Two daytime teams: 1 attending, 3 NPs, 1 fellow per team
Overnight: 1 attending, 2 NPs
Patient Census: 17–18 patients/day
Patient Population:
Majority pediatric
Neonatal population (8 beds)
~8% adult congenital
Case Mix:
350 surgical cases per year
High proportion of surgical patients
Heart failure population
Ventilated patients
Pre- and post-operative cardiac surgeries
Cardiac catheterization
ECMO (many patients)
Pre/post-transplant patients
Experience with ECMO preferred
EMR: Epic
Procedures
APPs may perform:
IVs
Arterial lines
Potential for intubations or central lines (most procedures completed by fellow or attending)
Skills Required
Comfortable in PCICU inpatient environment
Ability to manage patients from neonates to adults with congenital heart disease
Strong knowledge of pediatric cardiovascular critical care
Experience managing ECMO/CRRT/bags
Flexible, team-oriented, comfortable working nights/weekends
Excellent communication skills
Requirements
Board Certification: CPNP-AC
License:
NP: Active California license required
PA: May submit without CA license
DEA: CA DEA with Schedule II
Certifications: PALS, BLS
Minimum Experience:
At least 1 year of PCICU experience
Must have true pediatric cardiovascular critical care experience (not stepdown or OR)
Heart failure experience preferred but not required
Credentialing
Timeframe: 60–90 days
Expected Interviews: 2 (Manager + Medical Director)
