3 shifts per week (12-hour shifts)
Minimum 2 weekend shifts per month
5–6 night shifts per month
Clinical Scope & Responsibilities
The Cardiothoracic Surgery APP team provides comprehensive care to post-operative cardiothoracic surgery patients in both the CTICU and acute care floor settings.
The APP will manage patients following a full spectrum of cardiac and thoracic procedures, including:
Heart transplantation
Mechanical circulatory support (VA ECMO, Impella, IABP)
Responsibilities include:
First responder for CTS patient pages
Daily rounds with CTS Fellows, Attendings, Advanced Heart Failure/Transplant team, and ICU staff
Independent management of critically ill CTS patients
Histories and physicals
Ordering and interpreting diagnostics
Initiating treatments within scope and standardized procedures
Perioperative planning and coordination
Admissions, new consults, discharges, and transfers
Prescriptions, referrals, and consult coordination
Removal of chest tubes, pacing wires, IABPs, and arterial sheaths
Patient and family education and follow-up planning
A high degree of autonomy is required, with rapid recognition and response to changes in patient condition.
Clinical Oversight & Privileging
Clinical privileges granted based on demonstrated competency
Proctoring and FPPE required
Procedures and independent practice tracked via ECHO system
Procedural logs maintained through e-log platform

Board Certification: Required
Licensure:
Active California NP license required
(Licensing support available for PAs only; not available for NPs)
DEA: Required
Certifications: AHA BLS and ACLS required
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum 1 year of cardiothoracic surgery experience
Independent management of CTS patients in critical care settings
ECMO experience required
Strongly preferred background in:
Transplantation
Critical care
Cardiology
Acute care
Credentialing
Estimated timeframe: 60–90 days
