About the clinician's workday
This NICU has 58 beds and operates with six neonatologists on weekdays (three on weekends) supported by APPs, with 50-60 patients divided among the teams. Physicians work either 12-hour shifts, which include 6-8 hours in the hospital plus additional compensation after eight hours, or 24-hour call shifts with rounds followed by overnight call with residents. Each physician rounds on their own team daily, typically seeing 6-8 babies post-call if fully staffed, and while ECMO is not required, it is available for those who wish to provide it.
