New Shingles vaccine 90 percent effective

A study on the new shingles vaccine, Shingrix that spanned across 18 countries shows that vaccine protection will last up to four years. The vaccine has two doses and needs both to be 90 percent effective for all recipients regardless of age. Researchers are pleased with the results of the vaccination because most vaccines are not as effective in older people. Lead researcher, Professor Tony Cunningham, believes the vaccine will actually protect patients for a longer period of time and is currently doing research on whether it lasts for 10 years.

Study shows men with nonmelanoma history less likely to die from melanoma

A study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology looked at 900 cases of melanoma reports and discovered that men were not as likely to die from melanoma if they had a history of nonmelanoma skin cancer. Study co-author, Dr. Steven T. Chen, believes that men were diagnosed with melanoma in earlier stages because they were more vigilant of their skin health and keeping regular dermatologist appointments after having nonmelanoma skin cancer history. The five year survival rate for melanoma in the stages before it spreads to the lymph nodes is 99 percent making early detection important.
