What is the salary for a family practice physician?

LocumTenens.com conducted its Annual Salary and Employment Survey in May of 2021. Survey respondents represent family practice physicians who practice on a locum tenens basis as well as those with permanent salaries. Compensation results consist of only full-time, permanent employees and consider only annual salary and bonuses.

How does this year's salary for family practice physicians compare to other years?

Over time family practice salary has not fluctuated too much, but there was a 3% increase last year for family practice physicians, even though 29% did say they saw their annual salary decrease during the pandemic. Surprisingly, workload was split between increased, decreased and staying the same, with many comments reporting being short staffed and working more hours, hours being cut all together, or transitioning into telemedicine work to maintain patient balance.

Forty-one percent of family practice physicians stated being burned out and 66% said they had already taken or were plan on going on vacation. Almost half (47%) are planning on making a job change within the next year.

Family practice physicians who took this survey

Most primary care physicians were split pretty evenly between the baby boomer generation, generation X and millennials. In 2020 most family practice physicians worked in the southeast. More than half (63%) were full-time employed physicians. There was a wide range of experience fairly evenly spaced between respondents from just five years or less to more than 30 years of experience in the field. Methodology

Invitations for the survey were emailed to a database of more than 220,000 healthcare professionals in May 2021. Some recipients had been placed by LocumTenens.com, and some had not. There was a total of 2300 respondents, both physicians and advanced practitioners, who were self-selected and spanned all 50 states.
