Family practice salaries have not experienced wild fluctuations in recent years, but this specialty generally saw their salary increase during the pandemic. In 2023, the average family practice physician salary fell 12.3% from the previous year. This may reflect a combination of macro effects across the labor market, such as continuing consolidation within healthcare organizations and the growing prevalence of automated systems.

Family practice physicians who took this survey

Family medicine is driven largely by established, experienced physicians (40% said they had practiced for 21 years or more) and although the employment status segment is permanent employees (39%), contractor and locum tenens trail close behind at 34%. Well over half (60%) of respondents practicing family medicine identified as female.

This report was compiled using data from an original survey conducted by LocumTenens.com from August to September 2022. The 2,571 respondents represent a broad range of U.S.-based clinicians, roles, specialties, ages, facility sizes and experience levels. Some recipients had been placed by LocumTenens.com, and some had not. The age range of respondents is 26-79 and 46 medical specialties are represented. The data from the survey responses was compiled and analyzed by experts in the healthcare industry to formulate the insights shown here.
