Increased risk of cardiovascular disease after breast cancer

New research out of Brazil found that postmenopausal women who are survivors of breast cancer exhibited greater associations with metabolic syndrome, diabetes, atherosclerosis, hypertriglyceridemia, and abdominal obesity, all conditions that are major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Researchers propose that the increased risk is due in part to the toxicities of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and the use of aromatase inhibitors, which lower estrogen. While lifestyle modifications can help, it is imperative for women to schedule cardiology consultations when breast cancer is diagnosed and continue with ongoing follow-up care even after cancer treatments are completed.

Navigating the intricacies of cardiovascular surgery

A research team out of South Korea is making strides in cardiovascular medicine with new advancements in surgical technology. Scientists have developed an attachable guidewire microrobot that can reach precise locations inside blood vessels through magnetic steering. Further research and development efforts are still in progress. However, compared to existing methods, this new technology is expected to decrease the time of cardiovascular procedures while improving success rates by enabling surgeons to work with greater speed and accuracy.
