Finding new relief for severe dry eye disease

Researchers are studying eye drops containing a biosynthetic form of an enzyme called DNase, which acts by breaking up nucleic acid-based material that causes inflammation on the surface of the eye. While DNase is currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat cystic fibrosis, its use for treating severe dry eye is still considered experimental, but the clinical trials are promising.

When deteriorating nerve cells cause “ringing in the eyes”

In much the same way that tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, accompanies hearing loss, a similar phenomenon occurs in people suffering from retinal degeneration. As photoreceptors begin to die, the upsurge in retinoic acid receptors and retinal ganglion cell activity prevents the brain from picking out visual signals. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, are repurposing various gene and drug therapies in hopes to block the receptors responsible for causing the proverbial “ringing in the eyes.”
