Mono virus increases risk of seven other diseases

Cincinnati Children’s scientists have revealed that a protein from the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) binds itself in the human genome that can lead to an increased risk of developing several other diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Commonly called mono or the “kissing disease,” mononucleosis is very common with 90 percent of people in developed nations getting the disease by the age of 20. Scientists hope this new discovery will encourage others to research what other diseases EBV may lead to and develop a vaccine to protect against it.

Precision medicine comes to rheumatoid arthritis

Current treatment options for rheumatoid arthritis patients are hit and miss. Scientists in the U.S. have now used ultra-sound guided therapy to take tissue biopsies from rheumatoid arthritis patients. The tissue is then analyzed and patients separated for treatment by immune cell populations focusing on macrophages. Physicians then recorded how patients responded to different treatments. A different study is currently underway to see which groups of patients are responding more effectively to which treatments.
