Disarming diabetes and kidney disease with one drug

Because prolonged high blood sugar harms blood vessels in the kidneys, Type 2 diabetics are often at high risk for kidney disease, and possibly kidney failure. A recent clinical trial conducted by Stanford Medicine researchers found that canagliflozin, a drug approved to lower blood glucose levels in diabetic patients, can also significantly reduce the risk of kidney damage.

Non-transplant treatment option for chronic kidney disease

Patients on the waiting list for kidney transplants may be able to seek alternative treatment options in the form of amniotic fluid-derived stem cell therapy. In a series of studies performed by a team at Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM), scientists demonstrated how stem cells from human amniotic fluid can be harnessed to regenerate damaged tissue and help recover organ function in patients with chronic kidney disease. WFIRM researchers believe that compared the other forms of stem cell therapy, the unique characteristics of amniotic fluid-derived stem cells make them an optimal source for cell regeneration.
